About the Exhibition
Rooted Resistance: Art, Care, and Environmental Activism examines the intersection of creative work, caregiving, and ecological advocacy, exploring how these responsibilities both compete for and amplify each other's urgency. The exhibition demonstrates how parenting and familial concerns catalyze environmental action while artistic practice offers vital tools for imagining more just ecological futures.
Curated by Allison Belolan, Katherine Gressel, Caroline McAuliffe, and Jocelyn Russell of the Mother Creatrix Collective, the exhibition features works by 18 artists and community groups representing diverse approaches to the theme. Many of the featured artworks reimagine environmental care as an interconnected system rather than isolated individual efforts, drawing inspiration from nature's own networks of mutual support.
The exhibition extends beyond the gallery walls into Old Stone House's park and gardens through outdoor and site-responsive installations, creating connections between the exhibition, the surrounding environment, and broader environmental advocacy efforts. While offering concrete methods of individual and communal action, Rooted Resistance questions who benefits when environmental responsibility is framed as personal duty rather than structural necessity—a critique that becomes especially urgent as policies protecting future generations are systematically dismantled.
